Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas is approaching rapidly and the year is slowly coming to an end.

For the ETP Nanomedicine a very active year with many new developments and a number of challenges is ending. Many important things happened in the course of this year as e.g. a new Executive Board has been elected and Bertrand Loubaton as new chairman of the ETPN has taken up his work. Furthermore, the ETPN was able to provide input to the next work programme in the NMP area as well as to possible future activities and actions in the framework programme in general. Last but not least the ETPN can proudly look back to a very succesfull General Assembly and Annual Forum that was just recently held in Milan, Italy.

With the European Commission planning for the next framework programme (FP8), next year will surely by as interesting and challenging for the ETPN as well as for the Nanomedicine community in general. We are looking forward to an interesting CLINAM 2011 conference in May 2011 which will be co-organised by the ETPN for the first time as well as to the next Annual Forum of the ETPN in Fall 2011.

With this outlook we, the secretariat of the ETPN, would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for actively contributing to the success of the ETP this year and are looking forward to working for and with you next year.

We wish you and your family a merry christmas and a very happy new year 2011!

The Secretariat of the ETP Nanomedicine

Sebastian Lange, Nicolas Gouze, Idoia Valencia

European Commission launches European Innovation Union Initiative

The European Commission's "Innovation Union", launched on 6.10.2010, sets out a strategic approach to innovation, driven by the highest political level. The Innovation Union will focus Europe's efforts – and co-operation with third countries - on challenges like climate change, energy and food security, health and an ageing population. It will use public sector intervention to stimulate the private sector and to remove bottlenecks which stop ideas reaching the market. These include lack of finance, fragmented research systems and markets, under-use of public procurement for innovation and slow standard setting. The Innovation Union is a "flagship" in the Europe 2020 Strategy.

ETP Nanomedicine is contributing to the consultations on the Innovation Partnership on active & healthy ageing launched by the European Commission

The ETP Nanomedicine is prepared to contribute conceptually to the setup of the planned pilot Innovation Partnership on active and healthy ageing. A draft document on proposed actions has been compiled and is available for ETPN members for download here:

Furthermore, the ETPN encourages all its members to actively participate in the call for online consultations the EC launched recently.
The European Commission is seeking the views of public and private organisations, companies and individual citizens on how Europe could scale up innovation to meet the challenges of the ageing population in Europe, and in particular on a pilot European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on active and healthy ageing, as set out in the Innovation Union Flagship Initiative, presented on 6 October by Maire Geoghegan Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science and Antonio Tajani, Vice-President for Industry and Entrepreneurship. The online consultation runs until 28 January 2011.

Launch of the NanomedicineTV

As announced during the ETP Nanomedicine Annual Forum, the French SME Nanobiotix is planning to launch and sponsor a Nanomedicine TV. The ETP Nanomedicine is associated to this project as a co-sponsor.

Retrospective: ETP Nanomedicine General Assembly and Annual Forum 2010

The 2010 edition of the General Assembly and Annual Forum of the European Technology Platform on Nanomedicine took place in the Congress Centre of the Cariplo Foundation in Milan on 14th and 15th October.
